Balik Kampung

Raja and Meena crossed back over the sea and walked the whole long length of the peninsula again — up through the great forests, up the long green coast, until the land looked like something Meena knew in her bones. The padi fields. The blue shape of Gunung Jerai. The smell of home.

Raja walked straight through the kampung to the edge of the forest — the forest that had stood beside the village his whole life — lifted his trunk, and called.

And from deep inside the trees that had been there the whole time, a great grey shape answered. She had never left. She had searched these forests season after season, and never gone far — because a mother stays near the place her child was lost.

He had crossed the entire nation to find her. And she had been at the edge of home all along.

“You see, Thambi?” Meena whispered. “It was never out there. It was always here. Home held the answer the whole time.”
